Beam Angle also known as Field Angle, Beam Lumens or Beam Spread

The beam angle of an LED bulb or lamp is defined as the angle at which light is emitted from a given light source. A more technical definition specifies it as the angle between those points on either side of the beam axis where intensity decreases to approximately half of its maximum illumination (see diagram below).

LED bulbs are often described using a wide range of terms specifying either actual beam angle or a particular area a bulb will illuminate. For example, an LED bulb featuring a narrower beam angle is primarily designed to focus light onto an individual location or area whereas a flood light featuring a much larger beam angle will literally flood light into a much larger area. So wider beam angles will provide a lower intensity light over a wider area whilst narrower beams provide higher intensity of light, over a smaller area.

There is not a general standard amongst suppliers so it is important that you ensure you are using the correct lighting for your individual applications.

For the majority of domestic ceiling appliances a wider beam spread of 60 degrees or more should be adequate given the standard height of ceilings (approx. 2.4 to 2.7m) and the spread, range and number of lamps in a particular area. A narrow beam spread of less than 45 degrees is recommended for ceilings taller than 2.7 meters, and more lights will likely be needed. Please note that the type of bulb, wattage and colour used will also determine the beam angles available.

Downlights on the other-hand produce a spot of light, bright but narrow. This makes them best suited to low light areas such as hallways, walk-in wardrobes, a laundry room or playroom.

For lighting specific areas; the height of the ceiling & the distance between individual lamps are the two most important factors when choosing the correct bulbs. If you require uniformed illumination on a floor, the beam should be such that it overlaps the light from adjacent bulbs.

For applications such as a cabinet, where the distance from the bulb to the surface is short, a wide beam angle is recommended to provide distinctive uniformed light.
